Our social Communication group also known as SCG are for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ages 4-6. The children who have difficulties with language tends to lack social interaction as well or have difficulties in reading the non-verbal gestures, difficulty in initiating a conversation or unable to show interest in peer or others, etc.

The SCG group focuses on these issues and led by a Speech language therapist and the psychologist who have the skills and the experience in teaching and shaping socially appropriate behaviours. These groups, which may have 5 -7 children are created for children with minimal verbal skills. These sessions are run thrice in a week.

One of the reasons for the lack of communication skills can be due to Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). This is a neurological based motor speech disorder characterized by child’s inability to express verbally.

It is a serious issue and requires intense and frequent sessions by the Speech & Language therapist and the Occupational Therapist. These sessions are taken conjointly with by these two professionals and are customized according to the child’s need. These sessions are run twice in a week.

The Family Mediated Program is designed to provide parental support and promote knowledge gains around the child’s ASD diagnosis and to actively engage the parent in promoting skill acquisition or behavior change in the child or the reduction of the child’s maladaptive behaviors.

In this program, treatment primarily or initially involves the child working with a therapist. Parental coaching is used to promote application of techniques from therapist to parent or from clinic into the home and community.

    Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

How early should we start Intervention ?

To put it simply , intervention should start as early as possible .When parents begins to notice their child is not developing as expected & they voice these concerns, a common response is “They’ll grow out of it, just wait” . Unfortunately , the longer you wait the more difficulty you &your child may have . if you are concerned about your child’s development , whether its their communication , social skills or behaviours, then you should begin seeking information & assistance as soon as you can .
The earlier a problem is identified , the earlier intervention can begin, & the more likely your is to learn the skills they need to communicate , engage in social interaction & manage their behavior . If you’re still waiting for an official diagnosis , you shuoldn’t be waiting to start intervention. If you think there is something that needs to be addressed , get the information , services & training you need to address it .

Why start intervention so early ?

Research shows that children who receive intensive early intervention services are more likely to have improved long – term outcomes . These services can maximize their learning potential by addressing communication , play , problem behaviors & overall skill development from a very early age . We know , through intensive brain research , that neutral plastic (the brain ability to learn new skill) decrease with age . When children are very young their neutral plasticity is high , but as they get older it decreases . When this plasticity decrease , it becomes more difficult to learn new skills.
This is not to say that individuals with autism are not able to learn skills if intervention is not started by certain age . Their brains, just like everyone else, are capable of learning & using new skills & information at any time . Behaviorally speaking , however , as we all age & grow the skills we have learned which are effective &efficient will be more difficult to change due to a longer history of reinforcement . So the earlier we intervene to address an individual’s difficulties with communication , social interactions &problem behaviors the more likely we are to elicit quick & positive change.

    Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD or attention deficient hyperactive disorder is common in child and adolescents which is usually present with symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsiveness and poor concentration . ‘ Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental disorder that usually appears in early childhood. It makes it difficult for individuals to restrain their spontaneous responses- responses that can involve everything from movement to speech & attentiveness. ADHD is not only restricted to children , it can affect the adults too. But remember not all overactive , impulsive children with concentration problems suffer from ADHD. Only if the child exhibits all of the three classical symptoms – attention deficiency , hyperactivity & impulsiveness – in different setups such as the school, home, playground should the child be diagnosed with the condition.

Learning Disability (Dyslexia: Reading, writing, spelling learning difficulties)

Learning disability are diagnosed when achievement on standardized tests in reading, mathematics, or written expression is substantially below that expected for the age, schooling and level of intelligence.
Early Intervetion Services (E I S) This is available for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) who are below the age of 5 years with a purpose to integrate them into playschool/ integrated / inclusive school set –up.

It provides intervention which will help you regain function , maintain level of functioning , or make accommodations for any deficits you may be experiencing.
    Brain Gym
Brain Gym is a more effective ways to help children and adults who had been identified as ‘learning disabled. The basic idea behind Brain Gym is that the brain will develop, and learning will be enhanced, by certain bodily movements. It focuses on that physical activities which activate both side of brain and integrated brain functioning to helps child’s learning process. It has a set of movement activities such as “crawling, drawing, tracing symbols in the air, yawning, and drinking water” that, are said to help children, adults, and seniors too.

When used in an occupational therapy setting, Its movements can be focused to overcome an obstacle: a skill you can’t quite accomplish, a self-defeating habit or a potential within yourself you’d like to develop. Its exercise helps the child to integrate all the brain functions in their learning skills more effectively.

    Its exercise focus on-

    > Com DEALL- The program
    > The communication DEALL program grew out of concern for the increasing number of children identified with Autism Spectrum Disorders and the lack of adequate intervention programs for them in India. Intensive early intervention is documented to provide the best long term results for children with ASD even leading to successful mainstreaming for a number of them. The communication DEALL program is a response to the near total lack of such facilities in India.

The communication DEALL Program was started by Dr. Pratibha Karanth in 2000 and was inaugurated on the Nov 2000.
